Partnering with Mencap to tackle the employment gap in Wales

Our UK Insurance business, Admiral, has partnered with Mencap, the national charity supporting people with a learning disability, to help tackle the employment gap in Wales.
Through the partnership, Admiral is funding the launch of Employ Me Cymru, the first Mencap Supported Employment service in Wales for more than a decade. The programme will support adults with a learning disability in rural mid Wales to gain the skills, confidence and opportunities they need to move into paid work.
Across Wales, around 67,000 people have a learning disability, yet only a small proportion are currently in employment. Barriers such as limited transport, fewer local opportunities and social isolation can make finding work particularly challenging in rural areas.
Employ Me Cymru will offer tailored one to one job coaching, skills workshops, travel training and ongoing workplace support. The programme will also work closely with local employers to help build confidence around inclusive recruitment and create sustainable routes into employment.
Admiral colleagues will also be able to get involved through volunteering, mentoring and awareness raising activities, helping to champion inclusive hiring across Wales. The partnership reflects Admiral’s long-term commitment to social sustainability and creating a fairer, more accessible future for people with a learning disability.
Michelle Leavesley, Chief Sustainability Officer at Admiral Group, said: “Progress means creating opportunity for everyone. Through this partnership with Mencap, we’re helping to create meaningful, paid employment that supports independence and wellbeing. Together, we’re working to reduce inequality and build stronger, more resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
Jon Sparkes OBE, Chief Executive says: “Right now in Wales, too many people with a learning disability are going without the employment support they need and deserve. The gap in provision has left people facing unnecessary barriers to work, independence and connection with their communities. That’s why this partnership with Admiral is so important.
Without their funding, the project wouldn’t be possible. Together with Admiral, we will open up more pathways into meaningful, paid employment, helping people with a learning disability build confidence, independence and the chance to live their lives to the full. This is exactly the kind of partnership that can create lasting change.”
